| The difficulty in constructing an ileal pouch
in a child is that the pelvis is much smaller than in adult patients.
Consequently the pelvic nerves which control bladder and sexual
function are much closer to the bowel and more at risk of damage than in older patients. I think this means
different techniques are required to perform the operation in children.
Among the links at the bottom of the page is one for a graph of
the numbers of pouches I have performed for children with colitis.
Colitis is the commonest, but not the only reason for children to
undergo pouch surgery, and we have now completed over 60 pouch procedures on children as young as one year of age.
