What does this graph mean? This is a standard method of showing survival in a medical context (Kaplan and Meier were the statisticians who devised the technique).
The probability goes from one, (where survival is certain), to zero (where death is certain). This graph shows three steps down from a probability of one at birth, representing three babies who died in the early part of their life. So the probability of survival of a baby with oesophageal atresia in my hands is 0.88, or to put it in percentages, 88%. The other marks on the line represent surviving babies and their age at the time I compiled the data. This graph is a static image, and is not connected to real time data, so it will be out of date by a varying period between updates.
