Lib-Stats
hosts information useful for the analysis of usage statistics in
academic (and other) libraries.
Current issues are debated on the lib-stats
mailing list.
The
shift to electronic resources has given Library managers the opportunity
to analyse large volumes of associated usage data. We can compile
descriptive statistics from this data, and build a timely empirically-based
profile of service performance.
The work of Project COUNTER
acts as a quality stamp to ensure that usage data is both meaningful
and accessible. The raw web logs produced by vendors to monitor
the frequency of document access are now largely available
in a standardised form. Analysts can use COUNTER compliant statistics
with confidence; and commercial companies are offering to streamline
the data collection process. The challenge now is to use the statistics
to improve performance.
