Undergraduate summer bursaries

Undergraduate summer bursaries are sometimes available for Newcastle undergraduates for the summer between their penultimate and final years. In particular, the School of Maths and Stats often sponsors a number of bursaries for our own students. There are also other possibilities for obtaining summer bursaries - see the University page on vacation scholarships for further details. Please contact me early in the calendar year if you are interested in such a possibility.

Masters students

I often offer one research project per year on Newcastle's MSc in Computational systems biology. If you would like me to offer projects on other Newcastle Masters programmes, please get in touch.

PhD studentships

EPSRC DTA studentships are sometimes available for UK students with a good first degree. For non-UK students, you will have to arrange funding yourself. See our School postgraduate page for further details.

If you are a UK student in Maths/Stats or CS (with a strong maths/stats background) and expect to get a first class degree, then please contact me early in the calendar year before you graduate. The same applies for bioscience students with a good first degree and a reasonable maths/stats background who expect to get a good Masters degree in bioinformatics/systems biology (preferably a distinction). Projects can be developed on a case-by-case basis depending on background and interests, but some indicative possibilities are listed below.

• Parallel algorithms for Bayesian inference in large linear stochastic systems
• Scalable Bayesian analysis of high-throughput experimental data for Systems Biology
• Bayesian inference for stochastic computer models using Gaussian processes and Bayes linear methods
• Bayesian inference for hybrid discrete/continuous stochastic kinetic models
• Bayesian inference for heterogeneous stochastic biological models from population data

Research associates

Positions for research associates are typically closely tied to funded research projects. Such positions will be advertised on jobs.ac.uk (and here) as and when they become available. Note that I will be advertising for a computational statistician during 2014.

Visiting academics

There are several funding opportunities that exist for academic staff who wish to visit me to work on collaborative projects. Please contact me as soon as possible to discuss possibilities.
