DRH'S PREVIOUS NOTES - SUPPLEMENTARY ONLY - FOR CURRENT
STUDENTS (2002-3)
Markets and marketing can only be understood in context. A major context
in which markets happen is the national (and international) economy. These
notes provide a basic understanding of macroeconomic (economy wide) relationships
and interactions. Given both the importance and the scope of this
material, three weeks of course time will be spent on it.
4. Market
Situation & Outlook Conference
Students working in groups will prepare of Market Situation and Outlook
reports for presentation during the second semester. There is no interim
examination associated with this course other than these reports.
ThisRevision of market behaviour and analysis in the light of the Situation
and Outlook Reports and the first semseter's work.
This material revises and possibly extends the interaction between markets
(spatial equilibrium) topic from semester 1, and relates this to the activities
of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) with special reference to agricultural
trade.
A comparison between the EU's policies, as a natural importer, for supporting
agriculture and those of the US (a natural exporter), with reference also
to Canada and Japan as alternative archetypical examples of a natural exporter
and a natural importer, respectively.
A brief review of what competition means: Economics of product differentiation
and monopolistic competition; Competition, free trade and competitiveness
An idiosyncratic (i.e. personal) view of the development process (by your
lecturer)
