(From: http://www.cartoons.ac.uk/browse/cartoon_item/anytext=reg%20smythe?page=29) 'Geordie' is the name given both to the people of Newcastle / Gateshead and surrounding areas in the North-East of England and to the dialect of English that they speak. This module undertakes a computationally-based sociolinguistic analysis of a digital electronic collection of Geordie speech collected in the 1960s, and currently available as part of the recently-created Newcastle Electronic Corpus of Tyneside English (NECTE). It provides an historical background to the Geordie dialect and an introduction to cluster analysis as a computational tool for linguistic analysis, using both to take module participants through a step-by-step sociolinguistic study of a sample of Geordie dialect speech.
