In 1841, desiring to make more of his life than he could in the land of his birth he planned to emigrate to America. His diary June 3, 1841, tells of the outfit assembled to bring with him, including clothes, shoes and provisions costing 11 pounds, 13 shillings. Besides bed, bedding and a" thousand other articles from my Dear Mother, for which I can never be grateful enough." "Likewise 12 pounds from my never to be forgotten Father." "Many books from dear friends in the Waterbeck congregation. A Bible from Mr. Carlyle, William Paley's works from Mr. Thomas Carlyle, and small presents from many other friends.
On June 5th, 1841 he sailed from Liverpool, and after a favorable ocean voyage of six weeks landed at the quarantine station in New York Bay on July 29, 1841.
After a few days in New York he again took a steamboat up the Hudson River and by Canal to Newark and finally to Alton, N. Y. in Wayne Co., to his friends the Robert Clow family, where he stayed until the spring of 1844. On March 23, 1843, he was married to Miss Agnes Clow, daughter of Robert Clow.
April 20th, 1844 Mr. and Mrs. Patterson with the Clow's left New York by way of the Great Lakes and came to Chicago. (Record of trip recorded elsewhere).
After a brief stay in Chicago they came by stage coach to Naperville, on the 4th of May, leaving Chicago at half-past six in the morning they arrived in Naperville at one o'clock p.m. Two hired wagons brought part of their luggage and boxes, so they went into their hired house the same evening. The hired wagons cost $3 a day each. In a few days two of the Clow men went back to Chicago to the land office to see where wild land was to be had. They also bought a team of horses for $135 and brought one wagon load of luggage, about 1100lb.
Records state that on Sat., May 18th they "went south to see some prairie land on the Du Page river. All were so pleased with one 80 Acre lot, and one whole section that they thought of going to Chicago on Monday to deed it."
There is a break in the records of about a year, but they are resumed in June, 1845, when reports appear on the progress of building on the acreage acquired from the government for $1.25 per acre and located in N.W. Will County, Wheatland Township.
They quarried and hauled the stone for the cellar and foundation of the house themselves, doing the masonry work as well. The record states that it took 27 days to build the cellar. About a week later carpenter "Lyman" came to put up the house, starting on July 14, 1845, completing the job August 8, at a cost of $187. 20, including most of the material.
The hand dug well was 21 feet and 6 inches deep; this too was walled with hand quarried stone. The well was fed by a spring of excellent water and it is still in use. Grommon family, Frank and Agnes Boughton, the Walter Boughton family, now it is subdivided and is at the corner of Book Road and 104th Street).
Mr. Patterson was a truly religious man, and his life exemplified his Christian views. He was a faithful member of the Du Page Presbyterian Church. He served as a school director and did what he could in various ways, to promote the educational, moral and material well-being of Wheatland Township. In his political views he was a staunch Republican.
Mungo Patterson died July 16, 1906, at the age of 92 years, and 9 months, having lived a long full life on the same property he acquired as a young man.
