Present research activities.

Arrangements for the transfer of milk quota between farmers. This research will compare the market for transfer of milk quota in different EU member states. It will also re-examine the impact of the efficiency of the quota market on farmers' incomes.

Research into the marketing of milk in selected member states of the EU.

An analysis of the future structure of milk production in the UK. This research updates the model on structural change developed in 1999.

The economic efficiency of the use of inputs: milk. This report was submited to the Task Force on the utilisation of inputs, set up by the Minister of Agriculture in November 2000. Other reports in this series looked at the efficincy of input use in potatoes, cereals, pigs and sheep enterprises.

Details of research interests

1. Agricultural Finance. Definitions of financial stress in agricultural businesses, and using limited dependent variable models to predict which farm businesses are likely to become stressed/insolvent.

2. The Conservation of Genetic Resources. This research began by examining the contribution conservation biologists had made to the design of agri-environmental programmes. It developed into a study of the impact fo agri-environemental programmes on the conservation of plant genetic resources for food and animals (PGRFA)

3. The economics of growing genetically modified crops. The potential for GM crops for production and the reduction of environmental polution from pesticides, fertilisers etc.

4. The Economics of Milk Production. My research has included comparisons of the profitability of milk production, which can been used to benchmark dairy enterprises, the marketing of milk in the UK, the economics of milk quota and its efficiency, the structure of milk production in the UK

5. The Profitability of Leasing Milk Quota. A simplified framework of the profitability of leasing milk quota and an analysis of why some farmers may pay more than the "theoretical maximum" because this reduced their losses (i.e. it becomes the "second best" strategy).

6.The Economics of Mushroom Production. This interest began with by my involvement in a survey of mushroom growers in Great Britain.
