Science direct This site claims to "Bring the World's Largest Full-Text Scientific Database to your Desktop" you know you will have to take a look. This site offers access to over 1,100 journals across 16 fields of science based on the Elsevier Science collection. These journals cover many aspects of food production. Go to personal login and then access journals (i.e. username and password do not appear to be necessary).

Emerald e-library Contents, abstracts and full articles are available for many journals. Although the journal articles are only available if you register and pay a fee, you can gain a higher level of access for a 30 day period by registering as a guest user.

The owners of this site believe that 'Price discovery is the first step' to changing the way business is done. 'It forces the entire industry to de-bundle products and services'.

This is a grain trading site launched by Glencore Grains. Farmers are able to offer cereals, oilseeds and pulses to the market when they wish and make an instant trade. Additional market and currency data is also provided , along with contract details and financial recoreds.

Potato blight forecasts from Cyanamid. "Virtual" crops in the East, the Midlands and the West are modelled using Plant-Plus models. These combine local weather forecasts, information from in-field monitoring stations and details of crop canopy growth to produce spray recommendations.

British Potato Council's blight prediction site This uses Plant-Plus to model the development of the disease. Go to 'Research' and from there 'Blight Prediction'.

Milk

Milk quota trading on the net.

Promar International (the renamed and rebranded Axient). Promar International has launched an expanded Milkminder dairy costing service as a management tool on the internet. It allows a comparative look at the latest month's average feed costs, yields and margins with national averages dating back three years. Regional statistics are also provided. This is designed to allow farmers to benchmark their own performance. These comparisons can then be adjusted to take into account performance based on herd size, feeding regime, the type of milk produced and so forth, making this site a very powerful management tool.

Countryside Groups

National Farmers Union

Details of the network fo voluntary groups in the counrtyside. Rural net is supported by Action for communities in Rural England, Partnership Online and the Royal Agricultural Society of England.

The Farmers Conservation Group This is supported by Game Conservancy, Aventis CropScience and DETR. It aims to research, develop and inform farmers on practical conservation issues to help them meet future environmentally based subsidy payments. Standard membership of this organisation is free. One aim of the organisaiton is to train farmers for a Farmland Conservation Certificate, which may help grant and aid claims.
