CHAPTER 4: Question 5

Simple Answers

There are two other stereoisomers. One of these is the enantiomer of the structure drawn, the other is a meso compound which is a diastereomer of of the other two structures.

Structure drawn     Enantiomer of structure drawn     Meso compound

R                           S                                                 R
R                           S                                                 S

The enantiomer of the structure drawn will have a melting point of 170-172oC and a specific rotation of -12.4.
The melting point of the meso compound cannot be predicted, and its specific rotation will be 0.

The structure drawn is the l, syn, or threo diastereomer.
The enantiomer of the structure drawn is the l, syn, or threo diastereomer.
The meso compound is the u, anti, or erythro diastereomer.
