3D Explanation

The envelope conformation with the methyl substituent attached to the flap position in a pseudo-equatorial position is the most stable as only in this case is the methyl group staggered to all of the adjacent hydrogens and there are no non-bonded interactions. This is illustrated in the top 3D diagram shown above. The other 3D structures show three of the more sterically hindered conformations for comparison.
