CHAPTER 9: Question 7

Simple Answers

Osmium tetroxide will give the racemate of the l-diastereomer of 1,2-dihydroxy-1-phenylpropane, whilst meta-chloroperbenzoic acid followed by hydroxide will give the u-diastereomer.

If the cis-isomer of the alkene was used, then osmium tetroxide would give the racemate of the u-diastereomer of 1,2-dihydroxy-1-phenylpropane, whilst meta-chloroperbenzoic acid and hydroxide would give the l-diastereomer.

The reactions are both stereoselective and stereospecific.
