How to get to Newcastle University – Chemistry Department

Newcastle_Central_Station

The chemistry department is located in the Bedson building within the main university campus on Queen Victoria road. The front entrance accessible on Edward’s Walk; see location in Google Maps or Multimap. My office is room 1.10 on the first floor.

 

By Road – The A1(M) main north to south route passes by Newcastle, access from the north via the junction with the A167/A696 follow the A167 towards the city centre taking the Claremont Road exit for ‘Universities, RVI and Eldon Square’. From the A69 in the west, at the junction with the A1 take the northbound road and follow signs again for A167 / city centre. Parking is fairly limited in the campus itself but there are a number of public car parks situated around the university and city centre.

The city has an extensive local bus network and is served by National Express Coaches. The coach station is situated on Churchill Street near central station and the Centre for Life. See location in Google Maps.

Taxis services are also available from many locations around the city including central station and the bus stations at Eldon Square / Haymarket.

 

By Rail – The department is less than one mile from Newcastle Central Station which forms part of the East coast main line and is served regularly by National Express trains travelling between London and Edinburgh, CrossCountry trains from destinations such as Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Leeds, Birmingham, Bristol, Reading and Penzance. First Transpennine Express runs services to Manchester airport via York and Leeds and Manchester Piccadilly. There are a number of local services from destinations such as Carlisle, Morpeth, Sunderland and Middlesbrough. For more information see the National Rail Enquiries website.

 

http://www.touristnetuk.com/Ne/northumberland/images/displaypics/metro_logo.gifMetro – The Tyne and Wear metro service is a light rail system serving much of the area running regular services between Newcastle airport and Sunderland via Newcastle city centre and also a line from St. James Park to South Shields via a route encompassing North Tyneside, the coast, the city centre and South Tyneside. The closest station to the university is Haymarket situated adjacent to the campus – See location.

 

By AirNewcastle International Airport is situated (see location) about 6 miles north-west of the city centre and is served by regular flights (including budget operators) from within the UK (e.g. Aberdeen, Belfast, Bristol, Cardiff, London, Southampton) and Europe (e.g. Amsterdam, Brussels, Dublin, Paris, Rome).

 

The airport is connected to the city centre by the Metro system (disembark at Haymarket station, see above). Taxis are also available.

By Ferry – Daily car services operate between Newcastle and Amsterdam (DFDS Seaways), . The ferry port is located near North Shields (see location). For the city centre, follow directions for the A19 (northbound) then the westbound A1058 (Coast Road). A connecting bus service is available to the city centre (Central Station).
