After Yesterday

Friday 24th February 2006.

After yesterday things could not get much worse. To begin with there was horizontal rain
hail and snow. The roofers turned up at 08:10 but did not get out of their van,
don't blame them, I didn't even get out of bed. John turned up soon after, but even he
didn't try to do too much

Eventually I got up, showered, walked dog, and checked in on them. Things were drying out.

Roofing

Soon after things were busy. They worked at 4 deg C in a keen east wind.
Here you can see two working on the garage roof, and Alan from up the lane salvaging wood
for his new chicken shed. What you can not see is Tony & John erecting the logs on the right.

Roofing

Here is the roof complete. We do not need the scaffolding anymore.
What is more interesting is that the house is rising above the garage
.

Roofing

The ridge is not fixed with mortar, but a dry fix kit. It is not weathered by wind, water, or frost.

This is Friday, the end of the week, nothing will happen over the weekend.
Next week, on Tuesday, is the second delivery of wood for the house.
On Monday I hope Tony & John will put up what they can and ready the site for the next delivery.

The other thing we dare not mention is that some logs at level 20 are bad cut,
do not fit, cannot be erected. Artichouse has made a blunder. more about that ...
Measuring

Here is the end of a problem log, 2A19 for Artichouse 3106.
2 because it is the 2nd log, in wall A, at level 19.
The overall length of the log is correct at 6758 mm.

Measuring

The log nearest Margie is 2A19, layed next to it is 2A20 2A21 2A22 and 2A23.
They all line up at the righthand end and at the left end, but ...

Measuring

... the last two peg holes, cross joint shaping, and steel holes don't line up.
Logs 2A19 2A21 and 2A23 are wrong.
The intermediate logs 2A20 and 2A22 are both OK.
A look at the other logs in the other walls at these levels show no problem.
(All the above detail is for people at Artichouse who have the drawings.
Hopefully they can look at what their computers were told to do and instruct them
and the CAD/CAM machines to produce three good logs for us.)

Another thing that happens on Tuesday at 18:20 is the arrival of Keemo and Mat at Newcastle Airport from Finland.
Keemo will take over the construction of the timber frame house within the log cladding.
He will also sort out the the wrong cut log problem say Tony and John.
In fact they quite like leaving Keemo the difficult things to do.
Just as an aside, Keemo should have been here a week ago but he needed a heart operation so is a week late.
He said it was a heart pacemaker. My mother had one, she lived to a very old age.

What we have to do now is clear the site for the second delivery.
We were hoping to have all the logs up, but not so. They all need moving away
to make room for the 11 packages of wood/doors/windows/floors on Tuesday.

So the next update to this blog is likely to be late on Tuesday 28th February 2006.
