This is the Operations Supervisor, Roger Broughton.
We used to make home brew beer down in the telecoms room,
it was a very steady warmth, just right for brewing beer.
Behind him on the wall is 15 grey boxes,
each one was the termination of a 4-wire private wire
from British Telecommunications. The left hand rack
contains 3 modems, the speed of them was 9600bps.
Each weighed 25Kg.
Dave McGuire and Ada Chrisp (Davison).
Ada is typing on the IBM 1052 operator's console
behind Dave is the front panel of the
IBM System 360 model 67 computer.
This photo was probably taken about 1973, when Ada got married.[tb]
From left to right, (married name), start date
Ada Davison (Chrisp) 1 July 1969
Ann McGruther (Muers) 1 August 1969
Catherine Miller 3 November 1969
Valerie Crossley (Ragan) (Douglas [tb]back in 1985) 12 March 1973
John Knutson 21 May 1973
Dave McGuire ?

This is an early photograph of the
IBM System 360 Model 67 computer.
probably 1968, because it only has 500Kbyte
of main memory. It was upgraded to 1Mbyte
quite early on, when it was rotated 90degree.
Dorothy Baird is changing a 2314 disk pack
which could store about 30MBytes
whilst Eleanor (Ann) Beeckmans [tb] is at the console.
To the right of the bank of disks is a 2301 Drum Storage device
that provided 4MByte of intermediate data storage
which was fast because there was one read/write head per track.
The drum was vital for the support of Virtual Memory which was crucial
for the support of interactive computing where computer users
interacted directly with the computer via online terminals.
This is a completly set-up photograph, the computer room was never that tidy,
and that 7th switch from the left that is down on the front of the processor
is DISABLE INTERVAL TIMER, the the processor was doing nothing.
