A1058 Cradlewell Bypass

QUIT PREVIOUS NEXT

This bridge built in 1973 carries the A1058 Cradlewell Bypass over the Ouse Burn.
It is a big bridge crossing the Ouse Burn

Before it was built the Coast Road was just two lanes going steeply down Benton Bank
crossing the Ouse Burn over Benton Bridge (the NEXT one), then steeply up to Heaton.

This is the underside of the Cradlewell Bypass bridge with the old Coast Road to the right.

It crosses the Ouse Burn just beyond the red roofed house and its four lanes goes
through a tunnel to avoid the steep slope of Benton Bank. The area of Jesmond called Cradlewell
is on the top of the tunnel, hence Cradlewell Bypass (or should it be Underpass?)
