Practical Limits on Fillet Weld Size
For material thicker than 10mm a minimum weld heat input is necessary to promote fusion and prevent HAZ cracking
- this is a function of weld size
If there is a gap between parts the effective weld size is reduced
- a fit-up tolerance is necessary
Maximum weld sizes are dictated by cost and distortion
- there is more weld metal in a fillet weld compared to a butt weld of the same strength
