Welcome again folks to this year's Classic! Once again we will be playing for the Largey Putter and a host of other prizes over 19 holes. The Largey Classic has found a new home in recent years at the exclusive Whitley Bay Sports and Country Club. An extended range of activities will serve to put this year's classic in its appropriate sporting context.
The 19th hole and prize-giving will be at a local hostelry (the Briar Dene) and, with a little luck, with go on a good deal longer than the previous eighteen.
As always, the Classic will be played to the unique mix of Irish Rules (lots of club throwing) and Aussie Rule (lots of tinnies). The Aussie Rules cannot involve club throwing as they have a nasty habit of coming back.... As is the case with the real European and USPGA Tours, exemptions from qualifying are supplied to the top 15 from the Northumberland Tour and to all those resident on the East Midlands Tour over the past ten years. ). It should be remembered that participants in the Inaugural Classic in 1992 are granted a lifetime exemption from qualifying. As we are always keen on new recruits, these regulations are never applied anyway).

THE RULES OF PLAY |
2.1 | The Championship shall be played over 18 holes. |
2.2 | The Rules of Golf as drawn up by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club and the USPGA will apply. However as these are a bit 'fussy', application will be taken lightly! |
2.3 | Normal Golfing Etiquette will be strictly observed, which rules out the Irish Rules (club chucking) for a start. |
2.4 | All matches will be stroke-play |
2.5 | Matches will tee-off in groups of four maximum. |
2.6 | All tee shots shall be played with the non-putter club. Tees are optional, except on the eighteenth hole where they are compulsory (see Rule 2.10, Clause 1 below). |
2.7 | In the event of a ball ending in the water hazard (the toilet beside the 'Clubhouse'), the following shot must be played from where it comes to rest, and the club should not (for reasons of hygiene) be grounded in the hazard. |
2.8 | In ditches and under hedges where the ball may be deemed 'unplayable' the ball may be lifted and dropped no nearer the hole - under penalty of one stroke.. |
2.9 | As Irish Rules are out, Aussie Rules apply. This means 4 cans of beer (or other 'suitable' beverage - see Rule 2.9, Clause 2 - have to have been consumed by the 18th tee. |
2.9(1) | Discretionary extra (social) beers are permitted at any time (see Rule 3). |
2.9(2) | All beer to be consumed should be provided by competitors (in other words bring your own). |
2.9(3) | As some players may be driving, soft drinks will be allowed in exceptional circumstances but only if a request is received prior to the competition. Handicaps may be altered to allow for this (see Rule 3.1, Clause 2). |
2.10 | On the 18th tee, players must take a distinct run-up of THREE steps minimum in the act of teeing off. Any run-up considered by the Committee to be more akin to a stroll (known in the trade as "Filbarkring") will be considered a 'no-shot'. In the event of a 'no-shot', one stroke will be added to the player's score and the stroke shall be re- played. |
2.11 | In the event of a tie, Rule 4 applies. |

HANDICAPPING AND STANDARD SCRATCH |
3.1(1) | Intending participants will be awarded a handicap by the Organising Committee who will consider all entries and allocate handicaps (they ARE susceptible to bribery). |
3.1(2) | Players not partaking of beer (cf. Rule 2.9, Clause 3) solely for the purposes of improving their play shall, on the discretion of the Handicap Sub-committee, have their handicap brought down by a maximum of TWO strokes per can of beer refused |
3.2 | In the case of late entries, a rapid handicap will be allocated (as the handicap Sub-Committee will be on the beer by then). |
3.3 | The handicap Sub-Committee have in the past been alerted to attempts to enlarge future handicaps by 'blowing out' i.e. getting a ridiculously high score on one or more holes. These scores will be modified accordingly. |
3.4 | S.S.S. (par) of the course for the purpose of the competition is 72. All holes are par 4s. |

RULES IN THE EVENT OF A TIE |
4.1 | In the event of a tie, a sudden-death play-off will take place. |
4.2 | The first play-off hole will be the 13th, followed by the 18th. If no result is obtained over either of these holes, the match will proceed back to the 13th and these holes will be played in rotation until a result is obtained. |
4.2(1) | If time will not permit a play-off or the course is closed, the competition will be decided by a count-back over the second 9 holes. The player with the resultant lower (gross) score will be deemed the winner. In the event of players not being separated in this way, the trophy will be tied and will be held for 6 months by each party. |
4.3 | On each of the play-off holes, a can of beer shall be consumed by each participant prior to teeing off (this is one way of ensuring that the play-off is not prolonged!) |
