{"id":98,"date":"2021-10-31T20:47:31","date_gmt":"2021-10-31T20:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.staff.ncl.ac.uk\/corauhlemann\/?page_id=98"},"modified":"2023-07-21T21:01:19","modified_gmt":"2023-07-21T21:01:19","slug":"edi","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.staff.ncl.ac.uk\/corauhlemann\/edi\/","title":{"rendered":"EDI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I am committed to making a positive contribution to Equality, Diversity &amp; Inclusion (EDI) in academia and am supportive of underrepresented groups including women, BAME, LGBTQIA+, people with disability and students from state schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Female Scientists<br><\/strong>Together with Ulrike B\u00f6hm, I am running the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Physikerinnen\/\"><strong>facebook page \u2018Physikerinnen\u2019 for female physicists<\/strong><\/a>. Every week, we&nbsp;highlight an excellent women&nbsp;in physics (from student&nbsp;to professor)&nbsp;as&nbsp;\u2018female physicist of the week\u2019. A collection of features can be found on the webpage of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dpg-physik.de\/vereinigungen\/fachuebergreifend\/ak\/akc\/publikationen\/physikerin-der-woche\" target=\"_blank\">Equal Opportunities division of German Physical Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I took part in the 2020 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting online discussion on Women in Science, you can watch a video in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mediatheque.lindau-nobel.org\/videos\/38708\/debate\/meeting-2020\" target=\"_blank\">Lindau Mediatheque<\/a>. At Newcastle I recently organised a social for gender minorities in STEM and a small-scale postcard campaign to highlight &#8220;hidden figures&#8221; in the sciences.<br><br>If you are looking for a female speaker for outreach purposes, you can have a look at lists like<br>&#8211; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gage.500womenscientists.org\" target=\"_blank\">GAGE &#8211; 500 women scientists<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LGBTQIA+ Networks, Outlists and Ally Lists<\/strong><br>It can be a big help to LGBTQIA+ students, research associates, and staff to have a network of contacts who are LGBTQIA+ themselves or are supportive allies (like myself). To help build such a network, some colleagues and collaborators are choosing to put their names on so-called &#8220;Out lists&#8221; and &#8220;Ally lists&#8221; &#8211; publicly indicating that they are LGBTQIA+ or that they are allies supportive of LGBTQIA+ people, and that they are willing to be contacted to discuss things like the LGBTQIA+ climate at their institution and in their city. Here are the links to some organisations and collected lists relevant for areas touching my field of research:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Physics:&nbsp;<ul><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/lgbtphysicists.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"URL\">LGBT Physicists<\/a><\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iop.org\/about\/iop-diversity-inclusion\/LGBT-physical-sciences-network\" target=\"_blank\">Institute of Physics LGBT Physical Sciences Network<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/discord.gg\/Za5qrGTtzg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trans and Non-binary Physics Discord server <\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The&nbsp;<strong>Trans Physics Discord server&nbsp;<\/strong>is an online space for transgender and non-binary physicists &#8212; from enthusiasts to professors! &#8212; to socialise, network and support one another. All trans people and allies are welcome, and so far we have over 100 members from across the UK and overseas<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Astronomy:<ul><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/astro-outlist.github.io\" target=\"_blank\">Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics Outlist<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Mathematics:<ul><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/lgbtmath.org\" target=\"_blank\">LGBT Math<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Science\/STEM in general:<ul><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/500queerscientists.com\" target=\"_blank\">500 Queer Scientists page<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/mentoring.ostem.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oSTEM Mentoring <\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Newcastle University<ul><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/who-we-are\/equality\/lgbt\/\" target=\"_blank\">Newcastle University Rainbow Network<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Students from state schools &amp; disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds<br><\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.93percent.club\" target=\"_blank\">93% Club<\/a> &#8211; a charitable social enterprise dedicated to improving social mobility in the UK<br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/partners\/\" target=\"_blank\">Newcastle University PARTNERS summer school programme<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BAME<br><\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bbstem.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">BBSTEM<\/a> &#8211; a network to inspire the young Black British generation to pursue STEM subjects in university and beyond<br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bwisnetwork.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">BWIS Network<\/a> &#8211; a network for Black Women In Science<br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/groups\/4888611\/cite_black_women_in_physics\/library\" target=\"_blank\">Cite Black Women+ in Physics Bibliography<\/a><br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/aawip.com\" target=\"_blank\">African American Women in Physics\u00a0<br><\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blackinastro.com\" target=\"_blank\">Black in Astro<\/a> &#8211; celebrating and amplifying the Black experience in space-related fields<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Disability<br><\/strong>There are a wide range of physical and mental factors affecting access to and involvement with science, here are just a few interesting projects aimed at bridging this gap<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.audiouniverse.org\/home\" target=\"_blank\">Audio Universe<\/a> using sonification make the solar system accessible to the visually impaired in an audio planetarium show, directed by my Newcastle colleague Dr Chris Harrison<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/tactileuniverse.org\" target=\"_blank\">Tactile Universe<\/a> to make astrophysical images accessible to the visually impaired using 3D printing<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am committed to making a positive contribution to Equality, Diversity &amp; Inclusion (EDI) in academia and am supportive of underrepresented groups including women, BAME, LGBTQIA+, people with disability and students from state schools.
