{"id":6,"date":"2018-05-04T12:30:27","date_gmt":"2018-05-04T12:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.staff.ncl.ac.uk\/dennis.lendrem\/?p=6"},"modified":"2018-05-04T12:30:27","modified_gmt":"2018-05-04T12:30:27","slug":"peanut-allergy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.staff.ncl.ac.uk\/dennis.lendrem\/2018\/05\/04\/peanut-allergy\/","title":{"rendered":"Peanut Allergy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Allergic reactions to peanuts can be fatal.<\/p>\n<p>And peanut allergies affect around 1 in 55 people in the UK.\u00a0 (Around 2%)<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that <a href=\"https:\/\/mrc.ukri.org\/news\/browse\/scientists-develop-new-test-to-safely-diagnose-peanut-allergies\/\">Santos <em>et al<\/em> (2018)<\/a>\u00a0introduced a new candidate test for peanut allergy based on human mast cell activation.<\/p>\n<p>The ROC curve for the new test looks pretty impressive: the ROC AUC\u00a0= 0.87 with a best-case scenario giving a\u00a0sensitivity and specificity of 100% and 87% for severe peanut allergies.<\/p>\n<p>So far, so good.<\/p>\n<p>The trouble is that with a prevalence of just 2%, the False Alarm rate is likely to be rather high.\u00a0 More than half of all\u00a0positive tests\u00a0will be false positives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Allergic reactions to peanuts can be fatal.
