AGR 332: Projects (% of marks in module assessment)

The projects are designed to offer students the opportunity to (1) complete a project of their choice and in doing so enhance their computer skills, and (2) to provide an opportunity to apply the principles presented during the lecture course. Both project 2 and project 3 involve students visiting a local farm. They are asked to complete reports on these farms, much as a consultant would need to perform, e.g. by building and analysing cash flows and profit and loss accounts.

1

Micro-computing project (5%)

The objective of this project is to allow students to design a piece of software that will be of use in farm management. Most students use excel spreadsheets to construct a recording systems. For example, to keep records of pesticide applications and stocks, or to record cattle movements onto and off the farm and between fields.

2

Accounts Analysis Project (15%)

This project is designed to give students an opportunity to complete a set of profit and loss accounts for a farm. Students are given total revenue and expenditure separated into appropriate categories. The student uses these to construct enterprise gross margins and profit and loss accounts for the farm. This project includes a visit to the farm so that students can see for themselves the resources at the farmers disposal, and because students are asked to interpret the profit and loss accounts to identify strengths and weaknesses of the business and to suggest appropriate business strategies.

3

Tender for rental project (20%)

In this project a farm that has been advertised for rent is visited and students are asked to devise a farm business plan together with cash flow budgets and profit and loss accounts. From these they will be declare the rental value they would be prepared to offer for the farm.
