Research Projects

Past projects:

1. UK SERC funded project "High Performance Distillation Control", May 1991 - December 1992. The project aims are to evaluate and develop methods for assessing the performance of different distillation column control configurations and to investigate the robust control of distillation columns.

2. Teaching Company Programme with ICI on "Neural Networks for Process Control", January 1993 - December 1994. My responsibilities were to develop new techniques based on neural networks for process modelling, control, and supervision.

3. European Union funded BRITE/EURAM project "Intelligent Manufacturing of Polymers" (Project No. BE-7009), January 1994 - December 1997. The project has 10 partners within 7 EC countries. The Newcastle group is responsible for developing techniques for generic polymerisation reactor modelling and optimisation, data interpretation, software sensors, condition monitoring, inferential control, and nonlinear model predictive control.

4 European Commission funded research project: Monitoring and Control of Chemical and Biochemical Processes based on the Utilisation of Neural Networks (MONNET), July 1996 - July 1999. The project involves 5 partners from 4 EC countries. The Newcastle group is responsible for developing neural network techniques for nonlinear process modelling and control.

Present projects:

1. CPACT Project 5 - Optimal Control of Batch Processes, January 1998 - December 2000. This research is funded by the UK EPSRC under the project – Foresight Centre for Process Analytics and Control Technology.

2. UK EPSRC funded project "Nonlinear Optimising Control in Agile Batch Manufacturing", July 2000 - June 2003, Grant No. GR/N13319.

3. UK EPSRC funded project "Intelligent Computer Integrated Batch Manufacturing", December 2000 – November 2003, Grant No. GR/R10875.
