Timetable for Conducting Practical Sessions.

Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, have been timetabled as practical sessions for carrying out the experimental work portion of the project. Practical work should be completed on the scheduled days, since there will not be time to continue in subsequent weeks.

Student Groups

Student groups and schedules for the practical sessions are given on the page Student groups and lab schedules. Each group is expected to complete the project working together. This includes sharing the planning, the practical work, and writing the report.

Project Details

Summaries of what is required for each project have been drafted by the project supervisors, and are attached to this handbook. In many cases students are expected to have done some preparation work before the practical session. This is indicated on the summary sheet, thus students should check this sheet well in advance of the practical session.

Students should consult the project supervisor, and the designated demonstrator (see list of projects above) before beginning the practical work, for more detailed information about the equipment.

Important Notice

All students must use a lab book for all their labs. If you haven’t got one now, you must purchase one before your first lab practical. The demonstrator/technician signature at the end of the raw data records will be taken as the evidence of having completed the lab. Also, students must prepare risk assessment and fill in COSHH forms for each experiment they are to carry out. The demonstrator will check this before the students are allowed to carry out the lab. Without this, they will not be allowed to carry out the experiment.

The COSHH form and guidance can be found at:

Please also read through the text on the above web page.

Project Reports

For each project, each group must submit a Project Report. The format should be that given in the notes on report writing provided by Dr. Norman. Individual group members should not submit separate reports, since the ability to combine efforts is part of the assessment.

All reports should be handed in to Dr. Zhang (through School General Office), who will give the report to the project supervisor for marking. Reports should be submitted within two weeks of the experiment, e.g. if you do the experiment on the 6th of October, then the latest date for submitting your report is the 20th of October.

Assessment

The assessment for each group will be based on the mark given for the Project Report. Marks from Project 1 go to CME3005 Solids Handling, and marks from Projects 2 and 3 go to CME3004 Separation Process 2.
