You are probably looking at this page because you have had mail rejected from one of our mail systems with an error message referring you here. Please refer to the specific error below.
Your mail was rejected because the system trying to send it to us is listed in one of the JANET blocklists we use.
Note the decision to use these JANET blocklists is the University's: there is no point in complaining to the blocklist provider about it. Please read the short note "How JANET DNSBLs affect you" to understand better why we are using these particular blocklists.
If you want to contact us about this you should still be able to get mail through to postmaster@ncl.ac.uk. If you are not a source of spam and you're trying to legitimately reach one of our users then we can consider "whitelisting" you, i.e. bypass the blocking and let your mail through. We can, however, only do this on our own systems; other systems using the blocklist will still be rejecting you. If you want to get off the blocklist you'll have to follow whatever de-listing procedure the blocklist maintainers provide; follow the links below to the appropriate web site.
Which JANET blocklist blocked you is indicated by the name:
Name | Details |
---|---|
RBL-PLUS |
A composite of all the blocklists run by the
mail abuse prevention system
(MAPS).
This lists known spam sources, open relays, some dial-up lines,
and some open proxies.
Go here
to determine which blocklist you are on and to start the
de-listing process.

ZEN |
A composite of three blocklists (SBL, XBL & PBL) run by the The Spamhaus Project. These list the IP addresses of known spam sources and spam services, addresses which are victims of illegal third-party exploits and IP address ranges whose owners' policy is that they are not expected to be used directly for outbound e-mail. |
"Sender Policy Framework" or SPF is a system used by some mail sites to let other mail sites know which servers on the Internet are allowed to send mail for a particular domain. This error indicates that your organisation publishes such a list and that your mail was received from a server which is not in that list.
This is a configuration problem
If this page has not resolved your problem and you need further help, please e-mail helpline@ncl.ac.uk, indicating in the body or the subject that you have "read the reject page".
