Getting started with ISS Unix services

All of the ISS public Unix systems are closely integrated with each other and with the main ISS infrastructure. When you login to any ISS Unix system it asks another part of the Unix service to verify who you are and where your files are kept (your home directory).

This means that you can login to any ISS Unix system and always use your own files, e-mail, etc. Although the different systems provide independent computing power, they share the same support services.

ISS Unix Account

Before you can use any Unix service you need to apply for a ISS Unix account. Staff and students who have not been pre-registered for ISS services need to obtain this, free of charge, from the ISS reception on the ground floor of Claremont Tower. You will need your University smartcard.

Your Unix username will look similar to your Windows username (eg, n1234567) but is independent from it, changing your password on one service does not change it on the other. For security reasons you should choose a different password for your Unix account than for your Windows account.

The first time you use a newly-issued account you are required, for security, to change the password immediately, and you are guided through the process.

Your Unix home directory will be given an initial usage quota of 20MB, if you require more please contact the ISS reception for more information.
