A NOTE ON SOURCES
sources
primary
secondary

The bibliography which follows is a counsel of perfection. Much is of only passing relevance, and some of it chosen explicitly by way of illustrating errors.

You will not find all of the items listed in the University library; indeed, you will find but a fraction - though you will also find many items not listed here. It is imperative that you roam and forage for sources.

You should therefore make use of other facilities open to you, such as the City library, and the university libraries of Northumbria, Sunderland, and Durham, both of which are open to you (for reference only). Do also take advantage of inter-library loans. Your contact at the University library is Jessica Plane (jessica.plane@ncl.ac.uk) who is the arts liaison librarian, and who you will find very helpful.

In terms of the primary texts, you will find that the companion volumes to the official biography are not in the library; they are in my office. If you want to use them it would be quicker to come and get them from me. In fact, you may find it more convenient to come to me in the first instance on trying to get hold of a text.

Any volumes of my own which you are unable to find yourself, and are particularly in need of, are at your disposal, as Karyn can testify.

The element of research will largely be fulfilled by the handouts distributed to the group. However, you may wish to supplement this by use of the University's Special Collections department, in the basement of the Robinson Library. The Runciman and Trevelyan papers in particular will be of use and contain letters to and from Churchill. Do ensure, however, that you arrange a visit in advance with the archivist, Dr Lesley Gordon (Lesley.Gordon@ncl.ac.uk.)

The opportunities offered by the internet are potentially very great. You will already have been made aware of probably the best website: www.winstonchurchill.org, which has links to many others. The use of any search engine may produce significant discoveries, including sites, usually American, little short of potty. Other sites of interest include the National Library of Scotland's site (www.churchill.nls.ac.uk).

The two most important sources open to you, however, are Hansard and The Times. Hansard - the minutes of the House of Commons - is a mere transcription of spoken words; The Times, as with all newspapers has agendas. Nevertheless, both are items of record of which you should make use. The relevant copies of Hansard are on open access in the seminar library (and copies of Punch magazine sit with us during seminars. The Times is available on microfilm in the university library, though you will first need to consult the indexes. Your work will benefit from the use of these two mines of information more than it will from secondary texts. It will be noted during assessment whether you have exploited these key historical tools

This list of sources, as with any major historical enterprise, is divided into primary and secondary sources. Primary sources are those which derive from a participant in the episode under study. Though they are usually edited, to a lesser or greater extent, they remain the historian's principal material in reconstructing and analysing the past. Secondary sources are the products of that reconstruction and analysis, i.e. that which historians produce.

Each section is subdivided further. Part of our task is in assessing the significance of evidence, and some will be seen as being more reliable than others. For instance, diaries are usually more reliable as a source of information than are memoirs, but less valuable in terms of the considered judgement of a participant on an episode.

The extraordinary wealth of material should not be thought daunting, but part of the objectives of the course.
