CEGS Fantasy World Cup Competition

Rules

You must:

Pick 8 countries to play for you (from the list here – or use the spreadsheet and random team generator if you prefer)

No more than one from each group A-H (ie. you can not have England and Sweden in the same team)

No more than two of each ranking 1-4 (ie. you can not have Germany, England, France in the same team)

Those ranked 1 are the tournament seeds, those ranked 2-4 are based on their relative international ranking as of April 2006 (see FIFA website)

If you don't know (or care) who to pick - click on the "Generate my team" button below to create a random team

Also submit an estimate of the total match attendance figures for the entire competition (previous figures on the web if you look - numbers are in millions!)

Tie Breaker:

In the case of being on equal points the winner will be decided by being closest to the total match attendance at the tournament (as published by FIFA)

There may be a prize for best match attendance regardless

Each team wins:

3 points for a win

1 point for a draw

0 points for losing

Bonus points:

1 point for a clean sheet (regardless of result)

1 point for scoring 3 or more goals (even if they still lose)

Giant killer bonuses:

2 points if a team ranked 4 beat a team ranked 1 (ie. if Australia beat Brazil you pick up 2 points!)

1 point if a team ranked 3 beat a team ranked 1 or a team ranked 4 beat a team ranked 2

0.5 points if a team ranked 4 draw with a team ranked 1 (ie. if Australia draw with Brazil you pick up 0.5 points)

0.25 points if a team ranked 3 draw with a team ranked 1 or a team ranked 4 draw with a team ranked 2

so make those weaker teams count!

Penalty shootouts:

If the match is decided by a penalty shoot-out, the winner gets 3 points, the loser gets a point for a ‘full-time draw’ and any other bonus points they may deserve for a clean sheet or hat-trick (penalties excluded).

Email your team (ordered so team from Group A is first, B second etc.), your estimate of the total match attendance,

your team's name (and your name of course!) to:

richard.dawson@newcastle.ac.uk

I shall endeavour to update the scores every match day during the competition, but this may not always be possible due to work commitments
