Determination of Phase Diagrams
Generally determined from experimentally produced alloys cooled from the liquid phase
- High temperature phases can be ‘quenched in’ by cooling rapidly in some cases
- Thermal analysis gives some information
- Polished metallographic sections give some information - etching can show different phases
Techniques such as x-ray diffraction can be used to identify different phases
Composition can be determined by electron microscopy and microanalysis
Diagrams are calculated from thermodynamic data
