Magnetic fields
Magnetic fields can move an arc since it is a flow of electrons
- fields parallel to the parent metal surface may be generated by current flow to return electrode
- Lorentz forces generated by these fields will push arc sideways
- reduce this by careful positioning of the earth electrode
Magnetic fields may be deliberately applied to steer the arc
