Aluminium Alloys
Two main alloy types
- strain hardening alloys (1XXX, 3XXX, 5XXX)
- work hardening gives strength
- annealing of this may reduce strength in the HAZ (to the annealed value - use this in design)
- precipitation hardening alloys (2XXX, 6XXX, 7XXX)
- precipitates of controlled size and distribution give strength
- can overage precipitates and soften HAZ during welding (equivalent to T4 condition)
