Place the surfaces to be welded in close contact and explode a charge against one of them
- buffer used to prevent damage (e.g. rubber)
A metallic jet of deformed material forms where the surfaces contact
- removes contamination
- creates a wavy interface
Surrounding material is work hardened by the shockwave, no metallurgical changes
