Tool Failure Mechanisms
Crater wear - chemical interaction between tool and workpiece
Flank wear - abrasive wear by hard constituents of the workpiece
Built-up edge - welding of workpiece material to the tool tip which may become detached with part of the tip
Depth of cut notching - oxidation of the tool material with some abrasion from the edge of the chip
Nose wear - tool tip blunting from insufficient strength
Thermal cracks - produced by temperature gradients in repeated heating and cooling in interrupted cutting
