Interstitial Atmospheres
Carbon or nitrogen may sit below the extra half plane in an edge dislocation
If the material is under stress the carbon must be put back into solution
More energy is needed to separate the dislocation from its atmosphere
Once separated the dislocation is easier to move
- hence stress drop at the yield point
