Zinc and Corrosion Resistance
Zinc is a sacrificial coating
- it corrodes rather than the underlying steel
- depends on its position in the galvanic series
Variant coatings like zinc-nickel or organic/zinc-nickel composite coatings are barrier coatings
- coating separates corrosive environment from substrate
- must be free of pinholes
