Nitriding Steels
Contain elements which form nitrides to develop hard case (VHN)
Carbon is necessary for core strength but will obstruct nitrogen diffusion
- nitriding steels must be tempered (500oC to 700oC) prior to nitriding to develop correct core properties
- this affects hardness of case
Nitriding steels have poor machinability
