The course consists of in-depth consideration of three subject areas in order to understand aspects of materials selection, design, metrology and Surface Engineering:-

• Forming limit diagrams
• Joining and body design
• Surface Engineering

Gears

• Materials selection
• Gear design
• Manufacturing routes
• Metrology, tolerances (ISO) and manufacturing route
• Heat treatment and Surface Engineering

Cutting tools

• Historical developments
• Material selection
• Coatings and Surface treatments
• Surface Engineering
• CAD/CAM

Assessment

 For this 15 credit course a mixture of assessment methods will be used:

1. Marked tutorial sheet(s) (10%)
2. Assignments (30%)
3. Final exam (60%)

Assignment (Due 15th December 2000; maximum 30 pages, typically 15 pages long)

Based on the experience of the ULSAB consortium describe the steps a small automotive manufacturer would need to take to implement a 20% weight saving in a steel autobody? How would this change if the preferred autobody material was aluminium alloy?
