Winter was coming, and a swallow was flying to a warmer place.
It was the statue of the Happy Prince, who had lived happily in the city below.
However, the statue was crying.
He asked the swallow to take a jewel from his sword to give to a poor mother, whose son was very sick. The swallow then did as he was told.
Yet, the Happy Prince was still sad, because he could see that there were still many other poor people in the city. The swallow stayed to help.
But the cold weather began to make him very sick. One day, the swallow kissed the Happy Prince goodbye and then died at his feet.
The rulers of the city then decided to take down the statue and melt its body, but they could not melt its heart. Up in Heaven, God asked his angels to bring him the two most precious things in the city.
At last, the Happy Prince and the swallow were able to live forever in Heaven.
