Clinical Interests

My clinical training in Psychiatry was initially undertaken in Edinburgh, with my Higher Professional Training taking place in Newcastle. I have worked in a wide variety of settings including assessing patients in their own homes, undertaking clinics in GP surgeries, hospital out patient clinics, day hospitals and inpatient wards both in community units and psychiatric hospitals. I have had experience of assessing and managing children, adolescents, adults and the elderly with a full range of psychiatric problems including treatment resistant affective disorders, drug and alcohol problems and eating disorders. I have also worked in a specialist liaison psychiatric service dealing with both general medical and surgical patients and patients with neurological problems. I have gained considerable experience of clinical psychopharmacology, building on the basic psychopharmacological training that I have had.

Following obtaining my CCST in General Adult Psychiatry, I held an Honorary Consultant appointment providing outpatient and inpatient adult psychiatric care to a sector population of approximately 18,500 in central Newcastle for six months.

From April 1999 I have held an Honorary Consultant contract in the Regional Affective Disorders Unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. The unit specialises in the out-patient and in-patient treatment of resistant affective disorders and takes tertiary referrals from consultant psychiatrist throughout Britain.  Further information about the unit can be found by clicking the link above.
