PhD students

Ms. Yaxuan Yi

Yaxuan earned her MSc from the University of York, UK, and her BEng from the Chongqing University. From 2022 to 2023, she worked as a Quality Policy Specialist at the Institute of Quality and Reliability, Tsinghua University. Currently, Yaxuan is pursuing her PhD under the supervision of Dr. Haoyu Huang, with a research focus on the recyclability and reuse of timber structures.

Mr. Yifei Li

Yifei obtained his MSc from Newcastle University and his BSc from the Beijing Institute of Technology. His research interests include machine learning, structural design, and structural optimisation. He is currently pursuing his PhD under the supervision of Dr. Haoyu Huang, focusing on the application of tuned mass dampers for reducing timber floor vibrations.

Ms. Zhenhong Zhao

Zhenhong holds two MSc degrees: one in Logistics and Supply Chain Management from the University of Sheffield, and the other in Engineering Management from the University of York. She earned her BEng from Coventry University. Her research interests lie in digital construction, and she is currently pursuing her PhD under the supervision of Dr. Haoyu Huang, with a focus on digital construction management for timber structures.

Visiting Researchers

Ms. Ruijia Wu

Ruijia is a PhD student in Civil Engineering at Zhejiang University, China, under the supervision of Prof. Yan Xiao. She is currently a visiting researcher at Newcastle University, working under the supervision of Haoyu. Her research focuses on the mechanical properties of engineered bamboo materials, multi-story tall bamboo structures, engineered mass bamboo buildings, seismic design, and carbon footprints. During her time at Newcastle University, Ruijia aims to integrate her expertise with the research conducted by Haoyu’s group. This collaboration not only advances her research but also fosters stronger connections between Newcastle University and Zhejiang University.

MEng (Master of Engineering) Students

Haoyu supervises three MEng students at Newcastle University each year.

Most of them foucsed on research in timber floor vibration, timber connections and vibration control.

Past research students

Miss Luyue Yan

Luyue’s research is in ‘Shape memory alloy-based semi-active tuned mass damper for seismic applications’. She published one paper in Structures journal under Haoyu’s supervison. She is now employed by Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.

Mr Chang Wang

Chang’s research is in ‘Application of tuned mass dampers on CLT floor for vibration reduction’. He published three journal papers and one conference paper under Haoyu’s supervison. He is now employed by State Grid Corporation of China

Miss Junhui Zhang

Junhui worked on the research in ‘Effect of boundary conditions on the CLT floor vibration’. Junhui’s publications:
