We are organising a 5-day workshop relating to the design and statistical analysis of human genetic studies of Mendelian and complex diseases within the Pakistani population.

The workshop will be held at the Research Beehive, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. The workshop will include taught sessions (including formal lectures and hands-on computer practical exercises), guest lectures from invited guest speakers (experts in the field), and open discussion sessions to which all participants will be invited to contribute.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Basic concepts in genetics and inheritance
  • Linkage and linkage disequilibrium
  • Parametric and non-parametric linkage analysis of family (pedigree) data
  • Association analysis of family and population-based (e.g. case/control) data
  • Analysis of quantitative traits
  • Design and sample collection issues
  • Special issues pertaining to carrying out genetic studies in Pakistani populations

We will cover the general theory behind the approaches used as well as emphasize the practical aspects needed to give the best chances of success. The workshop is designed to assist people (e.g. biologists, geneticists, medics) who are actively involved in carrying out genetic studies within the Pakistani population.

Attendance at this workshop is by invitation only. Full costs of the workshop, including travel and accommodation, will be provided (via sponsorship from the British Council).

Participants should be researchers, doctoral students or postdoctoral researchers working in the field of human genetics or intending to take up research in this field. Participants will be expected to give a short talk (20 minutes) describing their research at the workshop. Participants will also be required to bring a laptop computer to run the analysis exercises.
