Operated in association with the Informatics Research Institute, an SGI Altix high performance computing (HPC) supercluster is available to research post-graduates and staff with computational jobs or simulations that benefit from parallel processing or require large amounts of resources such as disk and memory space.
Funding for this facility was made available through HEFCE's Science Research Initiative Fund (SRIF). £600 million was allocated to English institutions for capital projects and investment programmes. The fund is intended to support programmes which concentrate on a small number of major developments that have genuine impact on the research infrastructure of the institution.
