Two large multi-user Sun servers are provided for general Unix command-line tasks and to provide remote shell and FTP access.
Both systems support remote access using the secure shell (ssh) facility. Most modern Unix systems include the ssh utility (including Mac OS X) and all ISS Windows PCs include an ssh client in the Communications & Internet menu.
The ssh client is free for non-commercial use and can be downloaded for your own PC from the ssh.com site.
The time sharing machines are suitable for CPU intensive work beyond the capabilities of the Linux workstations. However, for larger computational tasks where interactivity is not required, the batch processing facility should be used instread.
