Linux Workstations

ISS provides Linux workstations running Fedora Core in several locations on campus for general computing use.

Clusters

Dual-Boot Workstations

In some locations we provide dual-boot workstations which provide a choice of Linux or Windows. To switch between operating systems simply reboot the machine and select your choice from the boot menu.

To reboot from Windows: in the login window, click on the "Shut Down" button and then select "Restart" from the drop-down menu. Click on OK to reboot.

To reboot from Linux: on the main login screen, click on the "Reboot" option at the bottom of the screen.

Bookable Clusters

The Moor dual-boot cluster is in a bookable room suitable for teaching. See the ISS cluster booking page for more information.

Note that the Moor cluster machines are only equipped with low-resolution monitors which may not be suitable for complex engineering use. Suitability should be assessed before booking.

Usage Guidelines

As well as providing a common Unix-based environment and specialist applications such as the Fluent suite, MATLAB and Maple, the workstations can also be used for common computing tasks such as word processing with the OpenOffice.org office suite.

The workstations cannot be accessed remotely. For remote access to ISS Unix systems (eg, from off-campus) the timesharing systems should be used.

Large computational background tasks should not be left running unattended on the workstations, for this please use the batch processing facility.
