Figure 1 - Pressure distribution for a compressor cascade predicted by the program CASCADE
The executable code CASCADE enables the student to undertake the design and analysis of two-dimensional turbomachinery cascades. The program provides the facility to select base profile thickness, stagger, pitch/chord ratio and camber (circular arc or parabolic), and automatically constructs the consequent blade profile. It then goes on to undertake a fluid dynamic analysis, predicting the surface pressure distribution and outlet angle using the "Martensen" boundary vortex element method. Some of these features are illustrated by the figure shown here, which is a screen dump of a typical graphical presentation from the program CASCADE.
Also predicted by CASCADE is the curve of outlet angle Beta2 versus inlet angle Beta1 and the inlet angle for "shock-free" (i.e. smooth) inflow. This facility enables the student to experiment with the design of cascade geometry to achieve a required efflux angle with smooth inflow.
