Fred Shao-Chuan Wu
BA in English (Tamkang, Taiwan) Mr Wu joined Newcastle University in 1998 as a lecturer on the Postgraduate Translating and Interpreting Programme and the Undergraduate Chinese Language Programme. He holds a BA in English from Tamkang University Tamsui, Taiwan (1988) and an MA in East Asian Studies from St. John's University, New York (1991). Mr. Wu also holds an MA in Translation and Interpretation from Monterey Institute of International Studies, California (1993). Between 1993 and 1998, Mr. Wu worked as a Lecturer in translation and interpreting at the English Department of Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages in Taiwan. He was also Director of the Szu-yuan Translation Service, which is affiliated to Wenzao College; this post involved managing translation and interpreting projects, recruiting translators/interpreters, and overseeing the College's translation internship programme. In Kaohsiung City, Mr. Wu helped design and teach the Taiwan Government's Public Service Employers' Translation and Interpreting courses, and the Interpreting Training Programme of the China Productivity Centre (a government-funded organisation offering various training courses to the private sector). Mr. Wu has interpreted at many international conferences, in subject areas such as steel production, harbour/port policy and management, public arts, Chinese political and economic issues, and more recently the UK-China Forum, a semi-official forum between the two governments. Since he joined the T&I Postgraduate Programme, Mr. Wu has been developing and teaching the interpreting modules as well as developing assessment materials and procedures for interpreting exams. With research interests in translation market needs, course design and assessment issues for translating and interpreting training, Mr. Wu maintains a close working relationship with professional practitioners in the field and continues to be engaged in translation projects with professional translators in Taipei, San Francisco, and Singapore. |
