Hardenability
Hardenability is a measure of the ease of forming martensite in a steel
- Steels with a high hardenability have a lower critical cooling rate
If the steel sample has appreciable size then the cooling rate in its centre will be less than at the surface during quenching
- there will be cases where the centre cools too slowly to form martensite whereas the edge does not
