Assessment of Hardenability
The hardenability of a steel can be defined as the maximum diameter of a bar which will form at least 50% martensite across its complete diameter when subjected to an ideal quench
- An ideal quench is one that reduces the surface temperature of the bar to that of the quench medium instantaneously
- This does not happen in practice but can be derived from data from real quenches by theoretical analysis
