Carburising Process Variants III
Plasma Carburising
- components in vacuum chamber heated in inert gas (resistance and discharge heating)
- components isolated from chamber electrically
- chamber acts as an anode
- components act as cathode in a glow discharge
- negative voltage applied to components generates discharge
- Hydrocarbon gas in then injected
- plasma breaks down gas to deliver carbon to surface
- plasma can clean surface oxides prior to carburising
