'Brainstorming' for a Timed Writing Test (TWT)

As we said before, if you have an Extended Writing Assignment (EWA), you have more time. This means you can read books and magazines, watch internet clips, DVDs and TV reports. If you have a Timed Writing Test (TWT), you only have a few minutes to think of your ideas, which means you need to practice 'brainstorming'.

Imagine you have an Extended Writing Assignment with the title: "There are both advantages and disadvantages to controlling the population of the world." You only have a few minutes to plan your essay. Write down 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages now, then click here to see my two ideas.

 

(Remember: It is very important to have a balanced argument. That means, if you think of 2 advantages, you should try very hard to also include 2 disadvantages in your argument. If you have three advantages, also include 3 disadvantages.)
