Choose a suitable text

A: Introduction
Imagine your lecturer has set an assignment and you have found a text you think might be useful. You do not want to waste time carefully reading through the whole text, checking every new word and making detailed notes if the text is not suitable!

You want to get a general idea of the text first to see if you can use it, and you want to do this quickly. This can be done by reading only certain parts of the text.

B: Activity aims and overview
The aim of this activity is to show you three different ways of quickly deciding if a text is suitable. This will be done by reading selected parts of the same text and deciding which parts give you the best general idea of the complete text.

Note: Please do not use a dictionary when completing this activity. Some difficult words have been removed and definitions have been provided for others.

C: Activity
First, read only the title, headings and instructions. Read them quickly (2-3 minutes) and write down your answers to the following questions:

  • What do you think will be the key ideas in the complete text?
  • Why do you think the complete text was written?
  • How do you think the complete text is organised?

Now repeat for the first and last paragraph only and finally for the first sentence of each paragraph. Remember to write down your answers to the questions above.
